Why I got all choked up at the mic

I flew to Philadelphia last week to speak at an event for investment professionals. It had sold out 3 weeks prior. (Whoa! That had never happened for them - or me!)

I stepped to the mic and noticed every seat was taken... but something looked off. I fought back tears — not because I was nervous — I mean I was (hi, introvert here), but it was something else, something bigger.

Every face, in every chair, at every table was a woman. TBH I had a lot of emotion. I’ve been in this business for over 20 years. This has never happened to me, but it did last week.

Tracy L Musser, who co-founded  Women in Investing Network (WIN) of Philadelphia, invited me to be the first speaker of 2023 because she believes in the females in finance; she believes we need to step into our authenticity and tell our stories together. No room at the proverbial table for women in this biz? The women in this network shake their head - nah. Not only will we make room at your table, we’ll get another room full of tables. For us.

If we want more women in this industry, we need to show that there ARE women in this industry. Women need to see faces that look like theirs, hear voices with stories like theirs. If we want it, we need to be it, own it, share it. Show women succeeding, thriving, building a career and a life they love with people they enjoy - like what I saw at WIN.

Here’s to the stories
And the people who are brave enough to tell them

Wow, what an amazing evening with amazing women! There was so much to learn from Stacy Havener, she was such an insightful speaker. Left me thinking on a lot but especially my stories and how I tell them. Thank you Stacy!

Must I say it was one of our best WIN events! Stacy, I could have listened to you all night. Thank you for making the trip to come speak with us. I have referenced story telling multiple times since last week….certainly made an impression on me!
